When and where should you have your car’s air conditioning system professionally cleaned?

When and where should you have your car’s air conditioning system professionally cleaned?

A clean air conditioning system not only ensures better cooling performance and higher efficiency, but above all protects the health of the vehicle occupants. Because after only a short time, harmful bacteria, germs, pollen and mold can accumulate on the evaporator of the car’s air conditioning system. This contaminated air flows through the air ducts into the vehicle interior in large quantities – often long before any unpleasant odor can be noticed. People with allergies and asthma in particular feel this impact at an early stage.

However, many drivers only realize late that their air conditioning system has a problem – usually when an unpleasant smell starts coming out of the air vents and the AC begins to stink. At the latest then, the question arises: When should you have the air conditioning cleaned – and where is the best place to do it?

Why is air conditioner cleaning so important?

Since air conditioning systems in most vehicles are used all year round, they are constantly exposed to various stresses. Moisture, temperature fluctuations as well as dust and pollen create ideal conditions for microorganisms, which gradually accumulate in the system over time – especially on the evaporator and in the area of the cabin air filter. These deposits not only impair the air quality in the vehicle, but can also negatively affect the performance of the air conditioning system.

An often underestimated factor: Within just ten minutes of driving, a person breathes in around 70 liters of air. This makes it all the more important that this air is as clean and unpolluted as possible.

If the car air conditioning system is not cleaned for a longer period of time, the following symptoms may occur:

  • reduced cooling capacity
  • unpleasant odors in the vehicle interior
  • irritated airways or watery eyes
  • additional strain on allergy sufferers, asthmatics and children

Regular, professional air conditioning cleaning therefore plays a crucial role in ensuring good indoor air quality and in enhancing the well-being of the occupants.

How often should you have the car air conditioning cleaned?

Many drivers wonder whether there are fixed intervals for cleaning the air conditioning system. Guidance is provided here by the VDI/ZDK Guideline 6032 – a recognized technical guide issued by the Association of German Engineers (VDI) in cooperation with the German Federation for Motor Trades and Repairs (ZDK).

The guideline recommends having the vehicle’s air conditioning system professionally cleaned no later than after 12 months. The main focus is on the evaporator and the cabin filter housing, as moisture and dirt can lead to microbiological contamination in these areas. However, if typical signs such as unpleasant odors, allergic reactions, or reduced air quality occur, the air conditioning system should and can be cleaned even before this period has elapsed.

For drivers, this leads to a clear, practical recommendation:
The air conditioning system should be cleaned hygienically at least once a year – ideally before the warm season or after pollen season. If the car is often used for short trips, in high humidity, or if children, allergy sufferers, and asthmatics regularly travel in it, regular cleaning is especially advisable.

Important to know:A standard refrigerant service, air conditioning maintenance, or simply replacing the pollen filter during air conditioning maintenance does not replace a hygienic air conditioning cleaning.

The evaporator in particular remains the main problem area for contaminated air and unpleasant odors. Only targeted, professional cleaning can provide a lasting remedy here.

Why are click boxes from retail stores often not enough?

To clean the air conditioning system properly, you have to eliminate the cause – the contamination on the air conditioner’s evaporator. The evaporator is installed deep inside the vehicle and is difficult to access.A spray can only masks odorsbut does not address the actual problem – the contamination of the evaporator.

Where should you have your car’s air conditioning system professionally cleaned?

When you have your air conditioning system professionally cleaned, what matters is not only the where, but above all the how. What’s crucial is that the cleaning is carried out by a trained specialist workshop that is familiar with the hygiene of vehicle air conditioning systems and works according to recognized standards.

With airco well®, certified and specially trained workshops work in accordance with VDI/ZDK guideline 6032. This guideline describes the recommended procedure for cleaning ventilation systems in motor vehicles.

Air conditioning cleaning with airco well® is carried out professionally, sustainably and hygienically, and is deliberately designed to go beyond merely masking odors. The airco well® cleaning process combines chemical and mechanical cleaning and is suitable for all vehicle models. Fragrances and colorants are deliberately avoided, making the process particularly suitable for allergy sufferers. This ensures reliable and thorough cleaning of the evaporator – including the area around the pollen filter, in accordance with the requirements of the directive.

The result:

✅ Noticeably fresher air
✅ Fewer microbial contaminants in the vehicle interior
✅ Better well-being on every trip

Increased airflow at the evaporator for a more efficient air conditioning system and improved cooling performance.
