Air conditioning in summer: Is a cold inevitable?

Outside there's summer heat, inside the car arctic temperatures

Summer is coming, temperatures are rising, and the holiday season is starting - but everyone knows it: A cold can ruin your plans. But why do colds happen especially in summer? Nowadays, almost every building and car has air conditioning that runs at full blast during the summer. The obvious temperature difference between the outside and the inside often leads to a cold quickly in the summer.

What you can do in the car to avoid catching a cold:

Follow these tips and reduce the likelihood of suffering from a cold and sniffles again next summer.

  • 1. Avoid drafts

The draft created by the air conditioner not only makes you shiver: it dries out the mucous membranes of your nose and throat, which can quickly lead to a cold. Therefore, never direct the louvers of the air conditioner straight at the seats, but always downwards.

  • 2. Set the temperature yourself

Adjust the temperature in your car yourself: It is advisable to set the temperature difference to the outside air to no more than 5 degrees Celsius

  • 3. Make proper preparations

If you ever have no control over the temperature of an air conditioner (e.g., public transportation), always take a light jacket or a thin scarf with you as a precaution.

  • 4. Ensure adequate humidification:

Dry mucous membranes in the nose or mouth are dangerous: viruses and bacteria spread and attack the immune system. Therefore, drink plenty of water – even in the car.
